A non audition choir based in Albany

Welcome to The Pohutukawa Singers

The Pohutukawa Singers have taken their name from the iconic New Zealand Christmas Tree – made famous by its wonderful crimson flowers which are often in full bloom in December. It seemed an ideal name for our new choir which began to take shape early in 2012. Many of the choir members had sung with Pro Voce, a choir which had been based in North West Auckland.

Who are we?

The Pohutukawa Singers are a non-audition choir based in the Albany area of Auckland’s North Shore. The members come from all over the Auckland region. Our repertoire comprises a wide variety of both sacred and secular music from the 16th to the 21st century. It includes madrigals, motets, folksong arrangements, carols, jazz, gospel, as well as contemporary music by New Zealand and Australian composers. Our first concerts were in June 2012 and were a very successful ‘joint venture’ with Kumeu Blend when we jointly sang the wonderful Requiem by Gabriel Fauré and followed this up with each choir singing a variety of secular music.

We have subsequently presented 2 concerts every year – usually in late Autumn and late Spring. We have also sung a selection of carols at the Christmas Lights events at MOTAT – the Auckland Museum of Transport and Technology.

Our Concerts:

After very trying times in 2020 and 2021 with multiple concert cancellations as a result of the many Auckland Covid lockdowns, we were thrilled to put together (at very short notice) a Christmas celebration in mid December 2021, when St Chad’s was filled by a very enthusiastic and appreciative audience.

We have since returned to some sense of normality having concerts twice a year at our regular venues of Albany Presbyterian Church and St Chad’s Anglican Church in Huapai.

As you will read in the “About” page, our new Music Director is Esther Leefe and work is well underway towards a couple of very exciting concerts in these venues in early July. Details will follow nearer the time.
